This course introduces students to the "big ideas" from the social science disciplines of political science, public policy, sociology and social psychology, and economics. Throughout the course, students will explore the following essential questions: What does justice look like? What is the role of government? What are our rights and responsibilities? What determines human behavior? What are the patterns of social change? What is my place in the world?

This course focuses on the concepts, methods, and practices of analysis of social welfare policies designed to address social problems in the United States. Students are expected to apply social science research training and critical thinking skills to study the ideological and socioeconomic contextual backgrounds of social problems, social policies, and policy analyses and evaluate various alternatives to problem definitions, policy strategies, and types of policy analysis.

This course traces the history of social welfare and within it, the evolving role of social work and social welfare. An analytic approach is used to highlight the forces that facilitate or inhibit changes in social policies. An overview of current patterns of provision is used with an analytic, evaluative framework.

This course, building on the content of Research I, is designed to enable students to apply the methods of social research to the evaluation of social work macro and micro practice (including individual practice) and programs. Students are expected to become familiar with issues related to the design, monitoring, and assessment of social work programs and interventions, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.

This course focuses on applied regression analysis and related multivariate methods. Linear regression is covered in depth, including regression assumptions, model specification, and diagnostics. Methods for dichotomous and categorical dependent variables, including logistic, probit, and multinomial regression are also be covered. Advanced methods including survival analysis, fixed and random effects models, and others are introduced. Students learn how to use the Stata statistical package for all analyses and class assignments.
